Montserrat is/was a beautiful emerald isle until a series of volcanic eruptions destroyed half the island in the late 1990s. The eruptions occurred 5 years after the island was rebuilt from the hurricane Hugo devastation. with no jobs, houses, or hopes for the future, half of the islands population moved away. We landed in the new capital city, still being rebuilt and yet to be named, which is sadly only a few restaurants and infrastructure buildings. Our excursion was a tour of the old capital city of Plymouth, which is a modern-day Pompeii.
